Firelator

The opportunity
Due to government legislation, it will be mandatory for households in the Netherlands to have a fire extinguisher installed. This created the opportunity to create a fire extinguisher that matches the home interior. The current generation of fire extinguishers are designed to be functional only and do not take their environment into account. So we asked ourselves: How can we provide a fire safety system to a common home in an intelligent and elegant way?

The system
The system consists of several components which "intelligently" communicate with each other. In case of fire, The smoke detector sends a signal to the docking-station, which in turn flashes red LED lights onto the casing of the extinguisher, making it easy to find in an emergency stress situation. A GSM-module sends a notification to the Fire Department.

The fire extinguisher
The flower shaped extinguisher should be placed near the exit/entrance of the house. The extinguisher is easy to use. Unlock by pulling out the lock strip, grab the handle with one hand and support the extinguisher with the other hand, point at the fire and pull the lever. The lever mechanism is released by pulling out the lock strip. Pulling the lever will activate the fire extinguisher. The extinguisher consists of a standard aluminum 2 kg powder tank in a flame-retardant casting made of translucent polyurethane.
